What is an HTTP proxy?

HTTP proxies can be used by any program that uses the http protocol. However, they are mainly used by web browsers. When your browser is configured to use an http proxy, it makes all HTTP requests to the proxy instead of going directly to the remote host. In turn, the proxy makes the same request on your behalf. Effectively hiding your identity (IP address).
